Director Ben Jagger's 'Room 203', while not entirely reinventing the supernatural horror genre, offers a compelling psychological study of dread and the burden of the past. Jagger masterfully employs cinematic techniques to craft a palpable sense of unease, from the haunting sound design that creates an incessant feeling of being watched, to the claustrophobic cinematography that emphasizes confined spaces and dim lighting, delivering a profound psychological horror effect. The tension largely stems from the characters' gradual mental deterioration rather than cheap jump scares.
The performances are a significant strength, particularly from Brianne Moncrief as Kim and Elisabeth Morris as Jess. Their complex friendship is authentically portrayed, with Moncrief effectively conveying the descent into paranoia and despair when confronted by an ancient curse. Jake Horowitz also delivers a solid supporting role. The film delves into themes of obsession, guilt, and the unraveling of relationships, positioning it among character-driven haunted house horror films, a modern take on Gothic horror. It’s a commendable indie effort, securing its place within the contemporary supernatural thriller landscape.
